Aparima Retreat
Riverton, Southland
Set on an elevated site in Riverton, this compact two-bedroom holiday home is designed to capture expansive views across farmland to the ocean beyond. Drawing on the language of the traditional Southland crib, the simple gable form is expressed through a refined palette of distressed galvanised corrugate and selected vertical cedar. A central living pavilion anchors the plan, with bedrooms positioned on either wing for privacy and balance. Floor-length glazing frames the outlook and fills the interior with natural light, while distinctive window forms at each bedroom end add architectural interest. The open-plan lounge and kitchen flow seamlessly to a deck and outdoor BBQ area, extending living outdoors. Inside, raking plywood ceilings with negative detailing enhance the sense of volume within the compact footprint, complemented by a wall-hung fire for efficient, space-saving warmth. Modest in scale yet strong in character, the home offers a contemporary coastal retreat grounded in its Southland setting.
